Regular readers of Lancaster’s ‘Car of the month’ feature might see a bit of a theme developing. With March’s COTM featuring the Peugeot 205 GTi and April’s looking back at the Escort XR3i, it seems only proper that we now look at the car which started off the whole ‘hot hatch’ movement.

News: Billing Off-Road Show 2018

This weekend is the Billing Off-Road Show 2018 in Northampton and this year’s show is set to be more special than usual! In celebration of Land Rover’s 70th anniversary, this year will see the show organisers and Land Rover Monthly attempt to set a new world record for the Largest parade of Land Rovers! We are supporting them in their quest for glory and our very own Dave Youngs, Lancaster's Car Club Manager, and Andrew Baron, one of Lancaster's Insurance Technicians, will be joining the convoy in a new Discovery. The figure to set is 633 and if you’d like to join in the fun and unite with other enthusiasts, sign up here.

The XR3i is synonymous with 80’s hot hatch Britain and young men (and ladies) at the time were almost tripping over themselves to get into Ford showrooms to get their hands on this iconic car.

With this year’s Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show only a month away, we’ve caught up with some of the Lancaster team to find out what makes the show so special to them. First off is Andrew Misseldine, our Car Club team liaison. Andrew has been with us for over 20 years and is a season regular at the show!

Our car of the month was first introduced to the public in November 1975 and during a 12 year production run over 150,000 were manufactured. The car in question is the Porsche 924!

Since we last met David’s Ford Prefect 107E, it has been treated to new main bearings and a fresh coat of paint. There have also been ‘little repairs’ to the off-side wheel arch and the bottom corner of the bonnet – and last year the Prefect appeared on the Boston Classic

When Chris Pollin takes his Trans Am for a spin, the public reaction is sometimes dramatic. This is hardly surprising, for not only is the Pontiac a rather magnificent vehicle in its own right, but it is also a doppelganger for the star of a certain television programme.

The year is 1948, the month is October and you are one of 562,954 visitors to the London Motor Show at Earl’s Court. Of course, your chance of owning one of the exhibits are pretty slim; the government allocated steel to car manufacturers on the basis on their being able to sell their wares overseas – 75% was the target – and the home market waiting list extends for literally years.

The early ‘whale tail’ version of the Sierra Cosworth featured as our ‘Car of the Month’ last year but it was the 4-door saloon version of this car, with its less extrovert styling, which became much more accessible to those looking for a fast Ford. Over the 4 years that the ‘Cossie’ was produced some 25,000 vehicles were snapped up.
